To load up a photo, login and click on "create content" on the left panel, then choose "image". In the image section, under the heading vocabularies, choose "photo galleries" and the particular gallery that you wish to post the image in.

Ignore the menu settings and make sure that the publishing options down the bottom (if you have those permissions) has "promote to front page" clicked off.
